Things to do and see in and around Conil

 

Conil de la Frontera is situated on the coast of La Janda, only 40kms from the capital Cadiz. Within an hour drive you can visit the Provincial National Parks (P.N.): The Sierra de Grazalema, P.N. Alcornocales, P.N. del Estrecho, P.N. marismas y Breña del Barbate, P. N. Bahía de Cádiz y P. Nacional de Doñana.

 

Sea lovers can practice sea kayaking along all the coast, surfing at el Palmar, Kite surfing in the Rio Salado and Castilnovo area of the Conil beach, snorkelling in calla Aceite and Sub Aqua diving in the Fuente de Gallo area at Puntalejos.

 

Rod fishing fans can enjoy fishing for our Mackerel, Sea Bass and with luck, maybe a Sea Bream

 

Cyclists can explore some of the 52 marked cycling routes that appear in the provincial guide.

For those who love walking there are some famous routes in the Cadiz Sierras, such as “ el salto del Cabrero” and in the P.N. de los Alcornocales the “subida al Risco Blanco” The latter requires reserving a permit in advance.  Closer to Conil is the “Torre de Meca y del Tajo” in the P.N. de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate and of course the wonderful beach walk from Conil to Cape Trafalgar a total of 22km return trip.

Birdwatchers are well catered for and a visit to the P.N. Bahia de Cadiz to observe the Flamencos is a great experience, there are bird watching stations in the P. Metropolitano Los Toruños and the pine forest of la Algaida. The straits of Gibraltar are one of the principal migratory bird routes between Africa and Europe.

Horse riding enthusiasts can organise rides from the various stables in Conil and of course Jerez is only 65kms away and is home not only to the historic sherry bodegas but also the famous Fundacion Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre

 

There are also excellent museums and points of Archaeological importance. Visit Cadiz with the Museo de Las Cortes, the Museo Aqueológico, Gadir y La Torre Tavira and going the other way towards Tarifa there is the site of Baelo Claudia with the Greco Romano theatre remains in Bolonia.
